ANTENNA // ANTENA

🇺🇸 If someone says antenna, my mind goes to TV. I grew up in the 70’s with black&white TVs, with internal antennas, which were a challenge to get a good image. While we’re watching we need to change the antenna’s position time to time. I had to find the antenna’s position with almost a millimeter precision.
 Then the satellite TV came, with the dish antenna. The screen image was perfect at least if a wind storm did change the antenna’s position. Now we don’t thing about TVs when someone says antenna. Later, cellphones started to use antennas for better reception. They still use it, but it’s an in-bodied version of it. The image of an antenna inside our living room is getting lost. Today, we use think of antenna as a tower.
 Antennas are instruments for catching and sending signals, but they can’t interpret the signal. They are part of a more complex mechanism. Antenna, receiver and transmitter. The receive interprets the message’s code that’s is coming and the transmitter do the same for the sending message. I’ve seeing people who acts like an antenna. They live to catch what is happening. They like to know what people are talking and whom they are talking about. Most of the time they are not interested in understanding what’s really going on, they just want to know and talk to others about it. Usually, that doesn’t end up good.
 We live in the communication era and of course there’s a lot o things being said. The part we’re playing in this complex environment will contribute or not to communication and relationships. Did you get it?

🇧🇷 Se alguém fala de antena, minha mente pensa numa TV. Cresci nos anos 70 com TVs preto-e-branco, com antenas embutidas, que eram um desafio pra ter boa imagem. Tínhamos que ficar mexendo na antena durante os programas. Eu tinha que achar a posição da antena quase que milimetricamente.
 Então vieram as antenas parabólicas. A imagem era perfeita, pelo menos enquanto não dava um vendaval e tirava a antena da posição. Agora não pensamos em TVs quando falamos de antenas. Depois, celulares começaram a usar antenas para melhor recepção. Ainda usam, mas são uma versão embutida. A imagem de uma antena está sumindo da mente. Hoje, pensamos em antenas como torres.
 Antenas são instrumentos para capturar e enviar sinais, mas não para interpretar. São parte de um mecanismo complexo. Antena, receptor e transmissor. O receptor decodifica a mensagem que chega e o transmissor faz o mesmo com a mensagem que vai ser enviada. Já conheci pessoas que agem como se fossem antenas. Vivem para capturar o que está acontecendo. Gostam de saber o que estão falando e sobre quem estão falando. Na maior part do tempo não estão interessados no que realmente está acontecendo, apenas querem saber e falar para os outros. Normalmente, isso não termina bem.
 Vivemos na era da comunicação e claro, muita coisa está sendo dita. O papel que desempenhamos nesse ambiente complexo vai contribuir ou não com a comunicação e os relacionamentos. Captou?

TIMER

🇺🇸 In July of 1994 Brazil won the World Cup. In the final my parents and my sister were in my parent’s house to watch the game. It was tense! Game went to penalties. Every kick was like a test to our heart. Brazil scored 4 out of 5 and Italy scored 3 out of 4. They still had one kick to tie up and keep the penalties going.
 My family was holding their breath when Baggio, best Italian player, started to run toward the ball, when the TV turned off. They got so confused, had no idea of what’s going on. They tough energy was down, but the lights in the house were on. They heard the neighbors yelling at the streets, celebrating. They were so frustrated about what happened and for missing the kick that made Brasil the champion.
 Soon the TV was working again. My dad was confused about that. It was a new TV and there was no explanation for stop working and suddenly went back to normal. Then my dad remembered, he was testing the TV before the game, because it was a new TV. He tried the timer and put the timer ON scheduling a supposed time the game would be over. He wasn’t counting with the game going to overtime or to penalty kicks and he forgot about the timer when the game went longer. Coincidently the timer was scheduled to the exact moment of the last penalty kick. .
 If we surrender the control to someone (or something) else that's what happens. We become hostages of their willing. A timer could be good, but having the control to decide to go on or to stop is even better!

🇧🇷 Em julho de 1994, na final da Copa, meus pais e minha irmã estavam na casa dos meus pais para assistir o jogo. Foi tenso! O jogo foi pros pênaltis. Cada cobrança era um teste para o coração. Brasil tinha batido 5 e marcado 4 e a Itália marcado 3 e faltava a quinta cobrança. Era o pênalti que decidiria.
 Minha família estava segurando a respiração quando Baggio correu para a bola e no mesmo momento a TV desligou. Eles ficaram confusos, sem a menor idéia do que aconteceu. Acharam que foi falta de energia, mas as luzes da casa estavam acesas. Ouviram os vizinhos gritando na rua comemorando. Mas ficaram super frustrados pelo que aconteceu e por terem perdido o lance que deu o título ao Brasil.
 Logo a TV estava funcionando de novo. Meu pai estava intrigado com isso. A TV era nova e não tinha explicação para parar de funcionar e voltar ao normal. Aí meu pai lembrou que ele estava testando a TV antes do jogo, porque era nova. Ele testou o Timer e ligou ele programando para desligar quando jogo acabasse. Ele só não contava que teria prorrogação e pênaltis e esqueceu do Timer quando o jogo demorou mais tempo que o programado. Coincidentemente o Timer desligou a TV exatamente no momento da cobrança do último pênalti.
 Se entregamos o controle para alguém (ou algo) isso é o que pode acontecer. Nos tornamos reféns da sua vontade. Um Timer pode ser bom, mas ter o controle para decidir parar ou continuar é bem melhor!

DO NOT ATTEMPT / NÃO TENTE FAZER

🇺🇸 Everyone knows that security is a very important issue and all precautions need to be taken in every situation. Every day this issue takes more relevance at home, schools, work places, streets, traffic and doing business. Every little detail counts when security is the matter.
 The same goes to what’s on TV. TV tries to entertain us and to make us to believe. News, commercials, documentaries are trying to convince us about what they're presenting. Famous people are selling, explaining and proving what they’re saying is true. The food we should eat, the clothes we should wear, the car we should drive. And they are convinced we are going to believe them. And they’re probably right.
 Have you ever seen a commercial on TV where the show, with very tiny letters, the frase “Do Not Attempt”? Usually is appears when they are show a scene with some risk to life involved. Lately I saw a car commercial, where a lady click the remote key and instead of get into the car she was lifted by a ballon through out the sky. Then the frase appeared. (I posted the video). I wonder, do we believe in everything that appears on TV that much? Honestly, I feel stupid when I see that frase, as I’m going to believe that a situation like that could truly happen. Who did it thinks so. They think someone could totally believe that scene could be true and to put life at risk. And if someone does believe, we’re in trouble!
 It’s hard to believe that someone could think everything on TV is true. It’s also hard to think that we became so fragile in our mind and thoughts. We should reconsider what kind of life we’re attempting!

🇧🇷 Todo mundo sabe que segurança é muito importante e todas as precauções devem ser tomadas em toda situação. Cada dia esse assunto fica mais relevante em casa, escolas, locais de trabalho, ruas, trânsito e negócios. Cada pequeno detalhe conta quando assunto é segurança.
 O mesmo é com a TV. Ela tenta nos entreter e nos fazer acreditar. Noticiários, comerciais, documentários tentam nos convencer do que estão apresentando. Famosos estão vendendo, explicando e provando que o que dizem é verdade. Que comida devemos comer, que roupa devemos usar, que carro devemos dirigir. E eles estão certos de que vamos acreditar neles. E talvez eles tenham razão.  
 Você já viu um comercial na TV que mostra, em letras bem pequenas, a frase “Não Tente Fazer”? Normalmente aparece quando mostram uma cena com risco de vida envolvido. Recentemente vi um comercial de carro, onde a mulher aperta o botão da chave do carro e sai voando num balão. Então aparece a frase. (Postei o vídeo). Me pergunto, acreditamos em tudo que aparece na TV a esse ponto? Sinceramente, me sinto um idiota quando vejo essa frase, como se eu fosse acreditar que aquilo possa acontecer. Quem fez o comercia acha que sim. Acham que alguém pode acreditar totalmente que a cena é verdadeira e arriscar a vida. E se alguém realmente acredita, nós estamos em problema!
 Difícil pensar que alguém acredite em tudo que aparece na TV. Difícil também pensar que nos tornamos tão frágeis mentalmente. Deveríamos reconsiderar o que estamos tentando fazer com nossa vida!
