🇺🇸 Paper is one of the most important inventions through out history. Although some believe that we’re near to the paperless era, paper will continue making part of our life for a long time. Paper is useful to countless situations. But it’s also important to preserve the nature, so let’s support paper recycling too.
Of course, you are familiarized with paper rolls. I’m talking about those rolls used by calculators, or credit card terminas or a registering machines. I don’t know if you already noticed the sometimes the paper comes with pink stripes. Maybe you know why, I think it’s pretty obvious, but I think it’s a very smart way to prepare the person who’s operating the machine to replace the paper roll before it ends completely.
The idea is to avoid paper run out while still printing the receipt. Smart idea. I like smart ideas like that. Ideas that make a lot of difference in life, although are very simple. But besides the idea, is its usefulness, the way it solves a situations that could make us embarrassed. Imagine if we have this help for every situation that involves our future. Always be warned of what is about to come, specially when it’s the end that is coming. In fact, a little different from the roll paper, we can develop this ability to look to what’s going on and understand where the happenings are being led. It’s a way to be prepared for everything.
Surprises are things that not everybody likes. Because the surprise can be not good at all. But if we can see a pink stripe suddenly appearing, it can gives us time to do something necessary before it’s too late.

🇧🇷 Papel é uma das mais importantes invenções da história. Embora alguns achem que estamos próximos da era “sem papel”, papel ainda vai fazer parte de nossa vida por um bom tempo. Papel é útil para inúmeras situações. Mas também é importante preservar a natureza, então vamos apoiar a reciclagem.
Claro, você está familiarizado com bobinas de papel. Estou falando dessas bobinas de calculadoras, terminais de cartão de crédito e registradoras. Não sei se já notou que tem vezes que o papel sai com umas marcas rosas. Você deve saber o porquê, é bem óbvio, mas eu acho que é uma maneira muito inteligente de preparar quem está operando a máquina pra trocar a bobina antes que termine toda.
A idéia é evitar que o papel acabe enquanto está imprimindo o recibo. Esperto. Gosto de idéias assim. Idéias que fazem diferença na vida, embora sejam simples. Mas além da idéia, tem a utilidade, um jeito de resolver uma situação quer poderia ser embaraçosa. Imagine se tivéssemos essa ajuda para cada situação que envolve o futuro! Sempre sermos avisados do que está por vir, especialmente quando se trata do final. Na verdade, diferente da bobina de papel, podemos desenvolver a habilidade de olhar o que acontece e entender pra onde isso vai nos levar. É uma maneira de estar preparado pra tudo.
Surpresas são coisas que nem todos gostam. Porque surpresas podem ser ruins. Mas se podemos ver listras rosas aparecendo de repente, nos da tempo para fazer algo necessário, antes que seja tarde.

🇺🇸 If someone says antenna, my mind goes to TV. I grew up in the 70’s with black&white TVs, with internal antennas, which were a challenge to get a good image. While we’re watching we need to change the antenna’s position time to time. I had to find the antenna’s position with almost a millimeter precision.
Then the satellite TV came, with the dish antenna. The screen image was perfect at least if a wind storm did change the antenna’s position. Now we don’t thing about TVs when someone says antenna. Later, cellphones started to use antennas for better reception. They still use it, but it’s an in-bodied version of it. The image of an antenna inside our living room is getting lost. Today, we use think of antenna as a tower.
Antennas are instruments for catching and sending signals, but they can’t interpret the signal. They are part of a more complex mechanism. Antenna, receiver and transmitter. The receive interprets the message’s code that’s is coming and the transmitter do the same for the sending message. I’ve seeing people who acts like an antenna. They live to catch what is happening. They like to know what people are talking and whom they are talking about. Most of the time they are not interested in understanding what’s really going on, they just want to know and talk to others about it. Usually, that doesn’t end up good.
We live in the communication era and of course there’s a lot o things being said. The part we’re playing in this complex environment will contribute or not to communication and relationships. Did you get it?

🇧🇷 Se alguém fala de antena, minha mente pensa numa TV. Cresci nos anos 70 com TVs preto-e-branco, com antenas embutidas, que eram um desafio pra ter boa imagem. Tínhamos que ficar mexendo na antena durante os programas. Eu tinha que achar a posição da antena quase que milimetricamente.
Então vieram as antenas parabólicas. A imagem era perfeita, pelo menos enquanto não dava um vendaval e tirava a antena da posição. Agora não pensamos em TVs quando falamos de antenas. Depois, celulares começaram a usar antenas para melhor recepção. Ainda usam, mas são uma versão embutida. A imagem de uma antena está sumindo da mente. Hoje, pensamos em antenas como torres.
Antenas são instrumentos para capturar e enviar sinais, mas não para interpretar. São parte de um mecanismo complexo. Antena, receptor e transmissor. O receptor decodifica a mensagem que chega e o transmissor faz o mesmo com a mensagem que vai ser enviada. Já conheci pessoas que agem como se fossem antenas. Vivem para capturar o que está acontecendo. Gostam de saber o que estão falando e sobre quem estão falando. Na maior part do tempo não estão interessados no que realmente está acontecendo, apenas querem saber e falar para os outros. Normalmente, isso não termina bem.
Vivemos na era da comunicação e claro, muita coisa está sendo dita. O papel que desempenhamos nesse ambiente complexo vai contribuir ou não com a comunicação e os relacionamentos. Captou?

🇺🇸 Cars are one of the major objects of the desire. They are more than utilitarian, they also can represent a level of status, attraction, power. More and more automotive industry is trying to make better, more beautiful and safer cars. Changes are expected, but cars will still make people passionate about them.
I learned to drive in cars with stick shift gear. Now I’m driving automatic cars. It’s funny because when I was learning, I used to hear people saying automatic cars weren’t good. Now I hear the opposite. Different opinions will always be part of our life. The challenge is to deal with the emotions, because sometimes we can take personally and when this happens the problems start to come along with it.
Driving a stick shift car is amazing. We feel the engine, the noise getting louder as the rotations speed up and that releasing sound when we change gear or when we make the tires smoke. On the other hand, until we get how to make the car to move on the first gear, that’s another challenge. Automatic cars don’t have the feeling of changing gears, but they’re easier to drive. We’ll never be worry about the time to change gear. Stick shit requires more control, automatic less. Life is not that different. It’s important to have control of our life, but sometimes we just need to leave things going naturally. .
That’s why for me it’s important to be able to drive both models, automatic and stick shift. Handling good both will help us to be comfortable in the different situations of life. At the end, we need to stay in the road.

🇧🇷 Carros são um dos maiores objetos de desejo. Não são apenas utilitários, também podem representar um nível de status, atração e poder. Cada vez mais a indústria automobilística está melhorando, tornando mais bonitos e seguros. Mudanças virão, mas carros sempre vão deixar pessoas apaixonadas.
Aprendi a dirigir em carros de marcha. Agora dirijo carros automáticos. Engraçado, porque quando estava aprendendo, as pessoas diziam que carro automático não é bom. Agora ouço o contrário. Opiniões diferentes sempre vão ser parte da vida. É um desafio lidar com as emoções, porque às vezes levamos para o lado pessoal e quando isso acontece os problemas começam a ter lugar na vida.
Dirigir carro de marcha é incrível. O som do motor, o barulho das rotações ficando mais alto e o som prolongado quando se faz a mudança da marcha, ou o quando fazermos o carro cantar pneus. Por outro lado, até pegarmos o jeito de fazer o carro sair em primeira sem pular é outro desafio. Carros automáticos não tem sensação de mudar marcha, mas são mais fáceis de dirigir. Não vamos nos preocupar com mudança de marcha. Carros de marcha exigem mais controle, automáticos menos. Na vida é assim também. É importante ter controle, mas às vez precisamos deixar seguir o curso natural.
Por isso acho importante saber dirigir os dois, automático e de marcha. Lidar com ambas condições vai nos ajudar a sentir confortáveis diante das situações da vida. No final, o importante é não sair da pista.

🇺🇸 A lot of people are not familiarized with the concept of eating meal paid-by-pound. It’s a very interest concept to have a nice meal and not worry if you paid too much for the food you ate. There’s some situation where at the beginning is wonderful, but after eating you feel like you paid more that you ate.
This concept of pay-per-pound buffet was invented in Brazil and became very popular there. In Brazilian culture the meal, specially lunch time, is a special occasion. Brazilians can’t live with the idea of “food was't enough”. Tables must to be full of every kind of food and people must eat as much as they can handle and there’d be always someone asking you to eat “a little bit more” and giving you a portion to go.
The problem is that an all-you-can-eat buffet is expensive, because there’s a lot of wasting and the owner has to add that in the price and most of the people is not crazy hungry to eat all. So someone in somewhere came up with this very creative idea of you put what is enough for you in your plate, weight it and pay for the proportion. If you eat more you pay more, if less you pay less. Everybody wins. Some people consider life as a competition, which isn’t. Life is sharing, because someone’s defeat can mean something bad even for the winner. If you’re looking for a better way of living, win-win is the way.
That’s possible, but is difficult. When we have a big plate in our hands we have the temptation to fill every inch of it with food. Like being in front a buffet, win-win requires us to give up some food we don’t need.

🇧🇷 Fora do Brasil as pessoas não estão muito familiarizadas com a idéia de comer comida por quilo. Pelo menos não nos Estados Unidos. Acho que é uma questão mais de cultura mesmo. Alguns se familiarizam mais fácil, enquanto outros resistem. A idéia é muito boa e deixa uma sensação de justiça.
Não sei dizer quem inventou nem onde foi inventado, mas no pouco que pesquisei deu pra notar que é algo realmente relacionado com a cultura brasileira. Essa coisa que brasileiros têm de fartura na hora da refeição, de que é melhor sobrar do que faltar. Pagar por quilo ajuda a aliviar a sensação não tão agradável que se tem quando, depois de pagar a conta, pensar que pagou bem mais do que comeu.
O problema com os serviços de buffet é o desperdício de comida. No final a comida que não se come tem que ser incluída no preço também. Nem todo mundo come “feito um condenado” pra fazer valer tudo que pagou. Já pra quem come pouco não compensa. Nessa caso, tranquiliza a cabeça de todo mundo, por saber que o que foi pago foi proporcional ao que se comeu. Todo mundo sai ganhando. Alguns consideram a vida como uma competição, mas não é. Viver é partilhar, porque a derrota de alguém pode também causar mal ao vencedor. Pra quem quer uma maneira melhor de viver, “ganha-ganha” é opção.
É possível, mas é difícil. Quando temos um prato grande nas mãos somos tentados a encher ele com comida. Como estar diante de um buffet, ganha-ganha requer abrir mão da comida que não precisamos.

🇺🇸 It happened to me twice. I got an error message from my printer saying that its work life was over and the printer stopped to work. The message told me to get in touch with the costumer service. I did and they said that to fix the printer it’d cost me the price of a new one. I didn’t accept it. That was the first printer.
Once I liked that printer I decided to buy another one, same model. I reached on eBay for an used one. Then I saw someone selling a “Kit to Install” the printer. USB printers don’t need installation kit. Searching a little more, I ended up finding a “way” to reset the printer. I had to turn it on pressing some buttons at the same time and… voilà! It started to work again perfectly. Later, I read that’s a bug from the manufacturer.
Recently it happened again. Because it’s a different model I had to search again until I find a “way” to make the printer to work again. On one hand it’s relieving, because I didn’t have to spend anything to make the printer to work again. On the other hand, it’s a little frustrating, because it was a problem that there was no need to have it. It seemed that, intentionally, someone wanted to make me go through some hard time and I had to deal with it. Don’t think this happens only with products we buy, this happens in life too. Situations when we are harmed intentionally and we have to find the solutions by ourselves.
Nobody likes to go through situations like that. Resetting a printer that stopped to work can be easier than going through bad actions done against you, but believe me, the solution can be easier than you think.

🇧🇷 Já me aconteceu duas vezes. Uma mensagem de “erro” da impressora dizendo que seu tempo de vida acabou e ela parou de funcionar. A mensagem dizia pra contactar a assistência técnica. Eu fiz e para consertar iria custar o preço de uma impressora nova. Não aceitei. Isso foi com a primeira impressora.
Como eu gostava da impressora, resolvi comprar outra igual. Pesquisei no eBay por uma usada. Então vi alguém vendendo um “kit de instalação” para a impressora. Impressoras de USB não precisam disso. Pesquisei e descobri um jeito de reiniciar a impressora. Tive que religar apertando alguns botões ao mesmo tempo e voilà! Funcionou de novo perfeitamente. Li que é um “bug" que o fabricante coloca.
Recentemente aconteceu de novo. Como agora é um modelo diferente tive que procurar de novo pelo jeito de fazer funcionar. Por um lado é um alívio, porque não precisei gastar nada para consertar a impressora. Por outro lado, é frustrante saber que foi um problema que não precisaria estar passando. Pelo jeito, alguém, intencionalmente, quis me fazer passar pela dificuldade e tive que lidar com aquilo. Não pense que isso acontece só com produtos que compramos. Acontece também na vida. Situações em que somos propositalmente prejudicados e temos que achar a solução por nós mesmos.
Ninguém gosta de passar por isso. Consertar uma impressora que parou de funcionar pode ser mais fácil do que passar por más ações contra você, mas acredite, a solução pode ser mais fácil do que pensa.

🇺🇸 Since e-mails became popular people changed the way they used to contact each other. The amount of mailing dropped considerably due to the easiness of send instant messages, letters and cards. Still there’s a huge volume of letters being mailed and the Post Office is trying to keep up with the competition.
Now the USPS is doing something that is very interesting showing their effort to better connect with customers. They are sending daily e-mails showing what kind of mailing we are receiving during the day. They are using the same exact tool that cause them to lose service to increase customer satisfaction and to keep relevant in the market. We can enroll for this service in the USPS website.
Every day they care to scan every envelop and package that is mailed to my address, attach them to an e-mail and send it to me.They call it Informed Delivery Daily Digest, and the e-mail is sent before 7:30AM. I’m not sure if this kind of service is offered by the post office in other countries. Anyway, I think beside being something good it can makes think about something else. Everybody faces problems in life and usually we try to avoid what causes problems. But sometimes we can turn those bad things into positive ones. Do you know that story about lemons and lemonade? It’s possible to change the game to our favor.
Maybe you should spend more energy training your mind to see positive possibilities before start to complain about bad things happening to you. I really believe that all things work together for good.

🇧🇷 Desde que e-mails se tornaram populares pessoas mudaram a maneira de contactar com as outras. A quantidade de correspondência caiu devido à facilidade que mandar mensagens instantâneas. Ainda existe um grande volume de cartas sendo enviadas e os correios se empenham em continuar vivos.
Agora os correios nos EUA estão fazendo algo interessante, mostrando seu empenho para manter os clientes. Estão enviando um e-mail diário mostrando qual tipo de correspondência vamos receber no dia. Estão usando a mesma ferramenta que fez com eles perdessem serviço para aumentar a satisfação dos clientes e continuarem relevantes no mercado. É só se registrar no site dos correios dos EUA.
Cada dia eles têm o cuidado de escanear cada envelope e pacote enviado ao meu endereço, anexar no e-mail e mandar pra mim. Eles chamam de Informativo de Entrega Diária e o e-mail chega antes das 07:30. Não sei se esse serviço também é oferecido no Brasil. De qualquer maneira, acho que além de ser algo bom, também nos faz pensar. Todos enfrentamos problemas na vida e normalmente tentamos evitar o que causa esses problemas. Mas, às vezes, podemos transformar coisas ruins em positivas. Sabe a história de fazer limonada com os limões da vida? Dá pra virar o jogo ao nosso favor.
Você poderia gastar mais energia em treinar sua mente para ver possibilidades positivas antes de começar a reclamar de tudo que acontece. Creio realmente que todas as coisas cooperam para o bem.

🇺🇸 I’m not a tea fan. When I was a kid my mom used to make black tea at home and I didn’t like to drink because of the taste and for being very hot. I don’t like to eat anything very hot. To cool the tea down, I used to drop some ice cubes on it. My taste for tea never got better, for any kind of tea.
My wife loves tea. She drinks tea every day, at least two bottles with no sweet! I know all about how good it is and I’m not against tea, I just don’t care about it. But tea makes thing about something else, about essence. The process allows the herb to release its essence, the best there is on it. The process is not comfortable at all, but it’s not enough to destroy the essence. In fact is exactly the opposite.
So to get the essence there’re two options: one way is to drink the tea, the other way is to eat the herb. But people say that the tea captures the essence in a way our body will process better. Also there’s the infusion, the vapor, which is good for our breathing. The boiling process easily can represent what happens in life. Having success in life has also to do with going through tough situations that can release our essence, our personality. We usually think we’re like herbs, subjected to life’s events, but we can be different than that. We can put ourselves in situations where our personality will be sharpened.
If you want to become the best version of yourself don’t just keep waiting for what’s is going to happen to you. If you know how better you can be, move yourself toward the source of life’s transforming power.

🇧🇷 Nunca fui fã de chá. Quando era criança minha mãe fazia chá mate Leão em casa e eu não gostava muito de tomar, por causa do gosto de por causa de ser muito quente. Não gosto de comida muito quente. Eu colocava gelo no chá para esfriar. O gosto nunca se desenvolveu, por chá nenhum.
Minha esposa gosta de chá. Toma todo dia pelo menos duas garrafas de chá puro sem doce nenhum! Eu sei o quanto chá faz bem e não tenho nada contra, só não curto. Mas chá me faz pensar em algo, sobre essência. O processo permite que a erva libera sua essência, o que tem de melhor nela. O processo não é agradável, mas também não é suficiente para destruir a essência. Na verdade é bem o contrário.
Pra ter a essência temos duas opções: uma é tomar o chá; a outra é comer a erva. Mas as pessoas dizem que o chá captura a essência da erva de um jeito que é melhor para nosso corpo absorver. Além disso tem a infusão, o vapor, que é bom pra respiração. O processo da fervura pode representar o que acontece na vida. Ter sucesso na vida tem a ver com passar por situações difíceis que liberam nossa essência, a personalidade. Pensamos que como ervas estamos sujeitos às circunstâncias da vida, mas pode ser diferente. Podemos nos colocar em situações onde nossa personalidade vai ser aprimorada.

🇺🇸 One of the most important thing for who wants to get into a job is to prepare the Resume, also known as Curriculum Vitae. It’s the first thing any employer will ask when offering a job. Basically all the professional information has to be put in it, with the academic certification and personal skills too.
We like to give the best impression through the Resume. Some put a personal photo, use fancy design and add a lot of other informations. Everything we think would impress a potential employer we want to put in there. Usually, our Resume is the best version of ourselves. There’s no other place we look so beautiful, competent, well skilled and gifted like our Resume. We only say good things about ourselves.
But if anyone asks us to say good things about ourselves and we respond: “I don’t like to do that. It’s not right to say what I’m good at”. We have some incoherences in life and this is one of them. We feel embarrassed saying good things about ourselves, while in our Resume one sheet seems not to be enough. Unless we’re lying, there’s no problem at all to put all the good things about ourselves in our Resume. Of course a Resume matters for all that is professionally important. Maybe if we should care more about the person in our Resume and bring that person to live with the rest of people in this world.
Like an employer, people like to have the best around them. Are we offering the same level of friendship, relationship, influence as we use to offer to a potential employer? Who are you out of your Resume?

🇧🇷 Uma das mais importantes coisas para quem busca um emprego é preparar um Currículo. É a primeira coisa que qualquer empregador vai pedir quando oferece uma emprego. Basicamente, toda informação profissional tem que ser posta lá, mais a certificação acadêmica e habilidades pessoais.
Gostamos de causar a melhor impressão pelo Currículo. Alguns põe foto pessoal, usam papéis com design e poem várias outras informações. O que achamos que vai impressionar um empregador, pomos lá. Normalmente, o Currículo é a melhor versão de nós mesmos. Em nenhum outro lugar somos tão bonitos, competentes e capacitados do que no Currículo. Só falamos coisas boas de nós mesmos.
Mas se alguém pedir para dizer algo bom sobre ós mesmo dizemos: “Eu não gosto de fazer isso. Não é legal falar do que sou bom”. Temos algumas incoerências na vida e essa é uma delas. Ficamos sem graça de falar coisas boas sobre nós mesmos, enquanto em nosso Currículo uma folha parece não ser suficiente. A menos que mintamos, não tem problema nenhum por boas coisas sobre nós no Currículo. Claro que o que importa num currículo são assuntos profissionais. Talvez devêssemos nos importar mais com a pessoa do nosso Currículo e traze-la para viver com o resto das pessoas neste mundo.

🇺🇸 I have a juice maker at home and I love it. I love what it does and how it does. Personally, I like to take the fruits or vegetables, cut home a put in the juice maker to see the juice filling the cup. I even like to wash it after use it and leave it in perfect use for the next time. I’ll tell you what it so interesting to me in that.
I believe in transformation. For me is one of the most fascinating experiences in life, is when I see anything being transformed into something else. Specially when I see transformation in a person. We were created with the capability to grow, to develop, to improve and I see transformation as part of these processes. And that’s what I see when I am using the juice maker. I see transformation.
But the interesting thing is that in this case the transformation is not about turning the fruit into something different. It’s the transformation of its condition. When a fruit becomes a liquid it’s because that liquid was in the fruit. The machine only work to bring out that part of the fruit. I don’t believe people can be transformed into something they are not. What happens is we can bring out of people characteristics they have and those characteristics can represent a transformation in them. If we’re able to make people show the best of what they are we create a power to make them love the best of what they can do.
There’s no better felling when we love what we’re doing. The results are always amazing too. But people are not like fruit. After squeeze a fruit, we trow it off. We should never trow people off. Never!

🇧🇷 Tenho uma centrífuga em casa e amo ela. Amo o que ela faz e como ela faz. Pessoalmente, gosto de pegar frutas e vegetais, cortá-los e colocar na centrífuga pra ver o suco encher o copo. Até gosto de lavar a centrífuga pra deixar ela pronta pra usar de novo. Vou dizer porque acho tão interessante isso.
Acredito na transformação. Pra mim, é uma das mais fascinantes experiências na vida. Quando vejo qualquer coisa sendo transformada em algo mais. Especialmente quando vejo transformação em uma pessoa. Fomos criados com a capacidade de crescer, desenvolver, melhorar e vejo transformação como parte desses processos. É o que eu vejo quando uso a centrífuga. Vejo transformação.
Mas é interessante que nesse caso a transformação não é tornar a fruta em algo diferente do que ela é. É a transformação de uma condição. Quando a fruta se torna em líquido é porque o líquido estava dentro dela. A máquina só extraiu aquela parte da fruta. Não creio que pessoas se transformem em algo que não sejam. O que acontece é que podemos extrair das pessoas características que elas têm e essas características podem representar transformação para elas. Se formos capazes de ajudar as pessoas a mostrarem o seu melhor, criamos um poder que fará com que amem o que de melhor podem fazer.
Não tem melhor sentimento do que fazer o que se ama. Resultados sempre vão ser incríveis. Mas frutas não são pessoas. Esprememos a fruta e jogamos o resto fora. Não fazemos isso com pessoas. Nunca!

🇺🇸 Years ago I was reading an article about the city of Rio de Janeiro in the Reader’s Digest. I love Rio de Janeiro, I was raised there and keep wonderful memories from that time. But the article started with an interesting detail about the city, which is true, and is very similar with New York City.
It said that the shortest fraction of time in Rio is the time between the traffic light turns green and the car behind you honk the horn. In situations like that it’s good to have a horn to honk because we don’t want to hear what kind of words the person want to say to us. But, the truth is that nobody likes to hear the honk of a horn. I think, honking is one of the things that makes traffic worse, it doesn’t matter where.
I don’t know about other cities, but there’re some areas in New York where is prohibited to honk and the fine is not low. But since 2013, the city decided to remove the signs of “Stop Honking”, because the authorities understand it’s a waste of time, although the city still charge fines for that. They say that there’re so many noises in the city that’s almost impossible to identify the necessary honking. Have you ever felt that your efforts to say something were worthless? You tried to say something and it seems that nobody is listening. Sometimes making noise is the only option we have to get people’s attention.
