🇺🇸 Ask a farmer what is the most joyful moment in his/her work and the answer will be: after every step of the process. Is not only about reaping, but every process done is a huge happiness. Preparing the field, sowing and reaping. Each one leads to the next one. Just like words that brings other words together.
Today’s word is RELIEF. When we go to the word’s origin we’ll find the latin relevare, which means “to raise up”. In the Old French the word got a meaning of an assistance to help lifting a weight. Think about a hand, or a machine, like a lever, that holds the weight with you and put the strength to make it work. Of course, the word also means the felling when some worry that’s bothering us is pulled off from our life.
The first thought in our mind when we mention relief is the relief we feel about something bad. Worries become a real weight over our mind, even over our shoulders, Some people try to solve their problems by themselves, some people promptly go after someone else’s help. But the main meaning of the word is to be a help to someone. Do you consider this? Not everyone is up to go for help. Relief is something you give, rather than something you seek. When we try to look outside of ourselves, it’s easier to realize that worries aren’t literal weight over our shoulders. Usually they’re just a point where we’re standing over.
Every stage we finish brings relief. We start and went over all challenges until the end and then we can find ourselves able to go further. That's the best thing to do. Remember, we never did anything alone.

Às vezes o problema com a digestão é o fato de não mastigarmos o suficiente.
Será que desassociamos uma coisa da outra? Quero dizer, será que quando temos um problema achamos que a solução vai estar em alguma outra coisa que precisamos inserir no problema que estamos passando? É assim que pensamos sobre medicamentos. É isso que as propagandas anunciam. O alívio está em alguma outra coisa que você toma para dar o alívio que precisa. Isso inibe a capacidade natural do corpo de lidar com os problemas. Vamos descuidando assim, até o corpo não conseguir mais e precisarmos do “alívio" constante da medicação. Ou podemos tentar mastigar melhor o problema.
Cada etapa concluída traz alívio. Começamos e fomos até o final e nos sentimos capazes de ir além. A melhor sensação é a de que podemos continuar fazendo muito mais, não a de ficarmos na dependência.

🇺🇸 One of the most beautiful landscape images I’ve ever seen was a wheat field, while I was traveling through the country of the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. It looked like a golden carpet and it had a special touch of a tree right in the middle covered with a lot of green leaves. I’ll never forget that image.
Plantation fields have this characteristic, plants grow TOGETHER. This is today’s word. It’s easy to see the meaning of the word, because is something towards gathering people, things, ideas. But there’s an old root, an adjective, that means “self-assured, free of emotional difficulties”. That point caught my attention. The biggest challenge of being together is to deal and harmonize everyone’s emotions.
Our emotions are the second strongest power in us. The first one is our will, but most of the time the will is affected by our emotions. We tend to protect our emotions with all our strengths. That makes complicated when two, three or more are together and have to discuss, dispute and confront the personal differences and interests. We use to thing that being gathered is to bring our emotions out of our interior, but what if we think like the meaning of the word? What if is it an opportunity to free our emotions? Maybe relating to other people’s emotions with be a lesson that will make us grow and stronger emotionally.
We’re made to live and stay together to each other. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it can be amazing. It’s like a game that the best result is to finish tied. Being together starts with the feeling that nobody will loose.

🇧🇷 Uma das mais bonitas paisagens que já vi na vida foi uma plantação de trigo, quando viajava pelo interior de São Paulo. Parecia um tapete dourado gigante com um toque especial de beleza, uma árvore carregada de folhas bem verdes no meio da plantação. O tipo de cena que jamais vou esquecer.
Plantações têm esse tipo de característica: tudo que cresce ali cresce JUNTOS. É a palavra de hoje. O significado é agrupar, reunir. Se puxarmos a raiz dessa palavra isso vai nos levar às bigas romanas, onde se juntavam dois, três ou quatro cavalos. Quando vamos para o grego vamos encontrar a palavra “zigoto” com a mesma raiz. Até a palavra “ioga”, sim da ginástica, vai ter a mesma raiz indo-européia.
A idea geral da palavra juntos tem a ver com tudo que pode ser agrupado, mas com o objetivo de gerar algo novo, melhor ou maior. Não é apenas estar juntos, é estar juntos com propósito! Seja para tomar uma decisão, para iniciar e fortalecer relacionamentos, ou para construir objetos, veículos, também para gerar uma nova vida, ou criar uma condição física e mental melhor. Estar juntos vai causar reações, que vão ter o objetivo de alcançar uma condição melhor, condição essa que jamais seria possível alcançar sozinho. 🇺🇸 Working with words makes our brain to exercise the logical and the emotional aspects of our mind. Words are logical for their form, combinations of letters, at the same time they’re emotional for caring meanings, exposed and hidden. The more we work with them, the more they will develop our power of thinking.
There’s always something else to reach with words, maybe because language and thinking seem never getting to an end. This is related with today’s word: ABSOLUTE. We understand that absolute means something complete, whole. But the real meaning of the word is different. The word comes from latin absolūtus, from absolvere, from ab, “away from” and solvere, “detach, untie”. It’s something “cut apart”.
If it’s cut apart it can’t be absolute, right? Someone would answer: “Absolutely!” Why did we come to the understanding that absolute means something complete? The idea of things being detached from each other makes these things free. Once something becomes free there’s no reason or need to give any explanation. It’s free. When we are free we can do whatever we want to. We become the complete owners of ourselves. The meaning of absolute is something divided, but the concept of the word became something entire. Maybe this controversy is the reason why sometimes we think we are what we’re not.
People don’t like absolutism. Most think it is a form of presumption. But in fact, absolute is the freedom to think, to believe, to accept whatever you want to. Because there’s nothing more absolute than free will.

Sempre há algo mais a se alcançar com as palavras, talvez porque linguagem e pensamento parecem nunca ter fim. Isso tem a ver com a palavra de hoje: ABSOLUTO. Entendemos que absoluto significa algo completo, pleno. Mas o real significado é diferente. If a picture is worth a thousand words, it’s just because it can show thousand of details that only words can describe. Different from the body’s metabolism, our mind eats and processes words and never gets full of them.
Another powerful thing about words is that although they’re abstract, they give us a very solid and concrete reality. Today I’m going to combine both in just one word: CHOCOLATE. We don’t consider chocolate as a word, because it’s so good that we can feel satisfied only with its taste. Chocolate is so good that people created a bitter version of it (dark chocolate) and people still love it and eat it like crazy!
The origin of the word chocolate comes from the Nahuatl, the Aztecan culture. The meaning of the word is still debated, but one thing is sure: chocolate comes from cacao beans. The word is chicolātl, which means “bitter water”. The natives of Mexico welcomed the Spanish with the beverage make of cold water and cacao powder, made with a beating stick. There’s a version that relate to the Mayan culture, where the drink was served with hot water. Both cultures related the chocolate beverage with human sacrifice. The Spanish took chocolate to Europe in the 16th century and the rest is a history that will never end.
Today, chocolate is considered one of the sweetest things in the world, although it started out as bitter. You might prefer not to eat chocolate, but remember that even bitter things can be turned into sweets.

Outra coisa interessante das palavras é que elas tanto podem ser abstratas quanto concretas e sólidas. Hoje vou combinar os dois aspectos em uma palavra: CHOCOLATE. Não consideramos o aspecto de ser uma palavra, porque é tão gostoso que nos sentimos satisfeitos só com o gosto. Chocolate é tão bom que inventaram a versão amarga dele e mesmo assim as pessoas amam e comem feito doidos!

🇺🇸 Words have their own specie, like seeds. We have nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, prepositions, prefix and suffix. Grammar wasn’t one of my strengths in school, although I like to pay attention to words. We can plant different kinds of apple, we can see the same characteristic in words.
Today’s word is PEDESTAL. Pedestals were a characteristic of the Roman architecture. They like to build columns and arches. To give a better sustention for the columns they built a base, usually squared, where the column was stood upon. They called this base piedistallo, which means “footstall”. They made it strong enough to support the weight. It became a requirement for every column in every built building.
Another important detail is that the pedestals should have a proportional measurement with the columns. So they ended up being part of the architecture, better than just a structural support. The columns were the most admired part in the construction, only because the pedestals gave them support. Pedestals represent every kind of support, for microphones, for winners, trophies and works of art. In life it’s the same. Most of what people see is not what makes us strong. Our strength comes from the foundation of our life. It’s what we put in our mind that gives us the support for all kind of our accomplishments.
So many people are more concerned about the exterior appearance, while the base of their life is weak. What kind of structure are you giving to the columns people see in your life? Something to be considered.

Gramática nunca foi meu forte na escola, mas eu presto atenção nas palavras. Podemos plantar diferentes tipos de maçãs e ver diferentes características nas palavras.
A palavra de hoje é PEDESTAL. Pedestais eram uma característica da arquitetura romana. Eles gostavam de colunas e arcos. Para dar sustentação às colunas eles construíam uma base, quadrada, onde a coluna era apoiada. A base era chamada piedistallo, que significa “lugar para o pé”. Era forte o suficiente para suportar o peso. Se tornou um requerimento para cada coluna de cada construção.
Outro detalhe importante é que os pedestais deveriam ter a medida proporcional às colunas. Assim eles se tornaram parte da arquitetura, mais do que um suporte estrutural. As colunas eram a parte mais admirada da construção, só porque os pedestais estavam lá dando suporte. Pedestais representam todo tipo de suporte, seja para microfones, para vencedores, troféus e obras de arte. Na vida é o mesmo. A parte que os outros vêem em nós não é a mais forte. Nossa força vem do fundamento da nossa vida. O que você coloca na mente é que vai dar o suporte para todo tipo de realização na sua vida.

🇺🇸 Technology is taking place on everything we do. Although I’m very favorable of technology I also have the idea of people working in a field preparing the soil, sowing the seed and reaping the harvest. For Centuries that’s how the humanity work in plantation fields. Different process, same results.
Today’s world in our plantation is DISC. It seems this word is not gonna last in our regular vocabulary. Usually we used it referring to old media format, like CDs, DVD and the old LPs. I don’t know what else, if you google it most of the images are an acronym from a personality test. The word comes from the latin discus, which comes from the greek word diskós from the verb diskein, which means “to cast”.
It seems that that verb was brought to the Olympic Games when the contenders had to throw an object as far as they can. Later that modality became known as Disc Throw. The round-flatted shape of the object helped the athletes to reach a further distance. Interesting is that the object got the name not because of its shape, but because of what the athletes had to do with it. Maybe that’s why when an artist is presenting a new album they say it’s a launching. It’s the idea of put something in motion to reach a distant mark. Both athletes and artist hope to reach high success with the disc, launched or thrown.

🇧🇷 Tecnologia está tomando lugar em tudo que fazemos. Embora eu seja favorável à tecnologia, também tenho a idéia de pessoas trabalhando campo preparando o solo, semeando e colhendo. Por Séculos foi assim que a humanidade trabalhou nos campos de plantação. Diferente processos, mesmos resultados.
Hoje a palavra em nossa plantação é DISCO. Parece que essa palavra não vai durar muito em nosso vocabulário. Usamos para nos referir a formatos de mídias como CDs, DVDs e LPs. Não sei para o que mais usamos. Se você procurar no Google vai ver um monte de imagens de locais de dança tipo discotecas. A palavra vem do latin, discus, que vem do grego diskós, do verbo diskein, “arremessar”.
Parece que o verbo foi trazido para os Jogos Olímpicos onde os competidores tinham que atirar um objeto o mais longe possível. Mais tarde a prova ficou conhecida como Lançamento de Disco. A forma arredondada e achatada ajuda os atletas a alcançarem uma distância mais longa. O objeto ganhou o nome não por causa da forma, mas pelo que os atletas faziam com ele. Talvez seja por isso que quando um artista apresenta um novo álbum dizem que vai ser o lançamento. É a idéia de colocar algo em movimento para alcançar uma marca. Ambos têm esperança de alcançar sucesso com o lançamento.

🇺🇸 A plantation will grow if it has all the necessary elements for that. Starting with the soil, then the seed, the water, the sun, the nutrients and the time. There’re other elements, they work as part of the process combining ingredients and processes not controlled by the farmer. Without them harvest is no complete.
Those are elements of fertilization, like the wind, birds and insects. They work unintentionally on the process, because their real intention is not fertilize, but they end up contributing with the process of fertilization. By carrying the pollen from one field to another they are influencing on the final result. External elements, out of the grammar, like globalization, immigration, have a huge effect on words.
One of the external elements on fertilization is the BUTTERFLY. This is our word today. There’re some different opinions about why they gave the insect this name. Some say it’s because of the color of the wings in some species, other say it’s because the color of fezes, some say it’s because of the texture and also, because they say they like to land on the milk to steel the butter out of it. It’s definitely a case of a name given according to the behavior. Someone looked to the insect, observed what it was doing and named it because of that. I don’t know about the butterflies, but we don’t usually like to be labeled.
Maybe you’re fighting against a “name” someone gave to you. Perhaps you’re saying to yourself, it’s not fair. People are looking to different aspects of our life. To which one do you want them to be impressed?

🇧🇷 Uma plantação vai crescer se todos os tiver todos os elementos necessários. Começando pelo solo, a semente, água, sol, nutrientes e tempo. Existem outros elementos que trabalham como parte do processo combinando o que o plantador não controla. Sem eles a colheita não será completa.
São elementos da fertilização, como o vento, pássaros e insetos. Eles trabalham sem a intenção de fertilizar, seu interesse no processo é outro, mas acabam contribuindo com o processo da fertilização. Carregando o pólen de um campo ao outro eles estão influenciando o resultado final. Elementos externos, fora da gramática, como globalização, imigração, têm um grande efeito nas palavras.
Um dos elementos externos na fertilização é a BORBOLETA. Esta é a palavras de hoje. Existem diferentes opiniões sobre o porquê deram esse nome a ela. É interessante porque o nome borboleta têm uma origem muito simples e básica. Nem tem muito a ver com o que o inseto faz ou características relacionadas à sua natureza. A origem do nome vem do latin bellus, que originou a expressão belbellita, que é uma forma diminutiva de dizer “bela”. Então alguém olhou para a borboleta fazendo um monte de coisas e o que mais destacou foi que achou ela muito bonitinha. Não gostamos muito de ser rotulados.

🇺🇸 Sometimes I like to play with words. I play specially when I write my texts. For me playing with words is to explore all possibilities with them. This is important when we want to say more using less words. That’s the nature of seeds. One seed can multiply itself and generate more than one sprout.
There’s also another interesting characteristic in nature. It’s possible to joint different plants. We call it grafting. Like we can have a rootstock, which is the lower part of the three, from a lime tree, while the upper part, the scion, can be an orange tree. They do that to better develop the plant. We can do the same thing with words and give them a broader meaning. It’s also funny to play with their meaning.
Usually words are combinations of two or three words. Like today’s word CONFUSION. That’s easy. We understand confusion as a mess or a misunderstanding. But when we look to the roots of the word we’ll see something particular. The roots come from latin con, meaning “with” and fusio “to blend, to mix”. The original meaning is to combine two different things in one, like a fusion, fusing one thing with another. And that’s why it’s a confusion, because after the fusion we can’t tell what’s one thing and what’s the other. Once everything is mixed it turned into a confusion. Sometimes even easy things can makes us confuse.
We’ll see situations when life brings new possibilities. Sometimes two or more situations will be jointed, to turn the opportunity into something bigger. Maybe it will look like a mess, but don’t get yourself confused!

🇧🇷 Às vezes gosto de brincar com as palavras. Especialmente quando escrevo meus textos. Pra mim é explorar todas as suas possibilidades. Isso é importante quando queremos dizer mais com menos palavras. Essa é a natureza da semente. Uma semente pode se multiplicar e gerar vários brotos.
Também existe outra característica interessante na natureza. É possível juntar plantas diferentes. Chamamos isso de enxerto. Podemos ter uma base de limoeiro com uma árvore de laranjeira. Assim se tenta o melhor possível para fazer a planta se desenvolver. Podemos fazer o mesmo com as palavras e dar a elas um significado mais amplo. Também me divirto brincando com o seu significado.
É comum formar palavras com junção de duas ou mais. Como a palavra de hoje CONFUSÃO. Essa é fácil. Entendemos que confusão é uma bagunça ou mal-entendido. Mas quando olhamos na raiz, vemos algo interessante. A raiz vem do latim con, que significa “junto” e fusio, “mesclar, misturar”. O significado original é combinar duas coisas diferentes em uma, como uma fusão, fundindo uma na outra. Por isso é uma confusão, porque depois da fusão não dá pra dizer o que é um e o que é outro. Depois que tudo é misturado vira uma confusão. Às vezes mesmo coisas simples podem nos deixar confusos.
A vida vai trazer situações com novas possibilidades. Às vezes duas ou mais situações vão se juntar, e tornar a oportunidade ainda maior. Talvez pareça uma bagunça, só tenha cuidado pra não se confundir!

🇺🇸 For me it’s amazing how a seed can turn into a tree. It seems like a TV cartoon where anything can happens. Where were the tree inside the seed? How can something so small to give something so huge. This is one of the most impressive things in nature. The same is possible to happen with words.
Amazing is a good word to describe what happens in nature. It’s something huge, but today the word I’m going to write gives a similar idea. The word is ABSURD. Usually we use this word to describe something out of proportions, something huge in the sense of going beyond our expectations, for good or bad, mostly for bad things. If someone does something we don’ts agree we use to say that.
Absurd comes from two latin words: ab, which means “out, away” and surdus, which means “silent, deaf”. So, originally absurd is something that breaks the silent, causes the reaction to speak and the need for us to express ourselves. Usually this is how we react when something huge happens. We make noise. Making noise can be a powerful weapon. That’s why campaigns like, “Breaking the Silence”, "If you see something, say something” are so important and we should support everyone who has something to say. It’s an absurd to impose silence to oppress people. We shouldn’t ever accept anything like that.
There’re lots of noises in our world and an important thing to do for the good is to listen to those who are trying to say words of freedom and hope. It’s an absurd what these two conditions can do, in a good way.

🇧🇷 Para mim é incrível como uma semente se transforma numa árvore. É como desenho animado onde tudo pode acontecer. Onde está a árvore dentro da semente? Como algo tão pequeno pode gerar algo tão grande? É uma das coisas mais impressionantes na natureza. O mesmo acontece com as palavras.
Incrível é uma boa palavra pra descrever o que acontece na natureza. É algo grande, mas hoje vou escrever sobre algo similar. A palavra é ABSURDO. Normalmente usamos a palavra para descrever algo fora das proporções, grande no sentido de ir além das expectativas, tanto boas quanto más, mais más. Se alguém faz algo que nos desagrada normalmente dizemos que é um absurdo.
Absurdo vem de duas palavras latinas: ab, “fora, além” e surdus, “silêncio”. Originalmente absurdo é algo que quebra o silêncio, causa uma reação de falar e a necessidade de nos expressarmos. Normalmente é assim que reagimos quando algo grande acontece. Fazemos barulho. Fazer barulho pode ser uma arma poderosa. Por isso campanhas como “Quebrando o Silêncio”, “Se ver algo, diga algo”, são tão importantes e deveríamos apoiar todos que tem algo a dizer. É um absurdo impor o silêncio como forma de oprimir pessoas. Nunca deveríamos aceitar absolutamente nada dessa natureza.
Existe muito barulho pelo mundo e é importante dar atenção às pessoas que tentam dizer palavras de liberdade e esperança. É um absurdo o que essas duas condições podem criar, no bom sentido.
