🇺🇸 Years ago I was reading an article about the city of Rio de Janeiro in the Reader’s Digest. I love Rio de Janeiro, I was raised there and keep wonderful memories from that time. But the article started with an interesting detail about the city, which is true, and is very similar with New York City.
It said that the shortest fraction of time in Rio is the time between the traffic light turns green and the car behind you honk the horn. In situations like that it’s good to have a horn to honk because we don’t want to hear what kind of words the person want to say to us. But, the truth is that nobody likes to hear the honk of a horn. I think, honking is one of the things that makes traffic worse, it doesn’t matter where.
I don’t know about other cities, but there’re some areas in New York where is prohibited to honk and the fine is not low. But since 2013, the city decided to remove the signs of “Stop Honking”, because the authorities understand it’s a waste of time, although the city still charge fines for that. They say that there’re so many noises in the city that’s almost impossible to identify the necessary honking. Have you ever felt that your efforts to say something were worthless? You tried to say something and it seems that nobody is listening. Sometimes making noise is the only option we have to get people’s attention.
Maybe you have another option. What do you do when you need to people to pay attention on what you do have to say? Usually honking in traffic only gets more rage. Please, do not forget about this detail.

🇧🇷 Faz anos, eu estava lendo um artigo sobre a cidade do Rio de Janeiro na revista Seleções. Amo o Rio de Janeiro, fui criado lá e guardo grandes lembranças daquele tempo. Mas o artigo começou com um detalhe interessante sobre a cidade, e que é verdade, e também muito parecido com New York.
Dizia que a menor fração de tempo que existe é o tempo do sinal ficar verde e o carro de trás buzinar. Em situações assim até que é bom ter a buzina porque não vamos querer ouvir as palavras que a pessoa vai estar querendo dizer. Mas a verdade é que ninguém gosta de ouvir o barulho de buzina. Acho que buzina é uma das coisas que faz o trânsito ficar pior, não importa onde estivermos.
Não sei sobre outras cidades, mas em New York têm algumas áreas onde é proibido buzinar e a multa não é nada barata. Desde 2013, a cidade removeu as placas de “proibido buzinar”, porque as autoridades entenderam que era perda de tempo, embora ainda cobrem as multas. Eles dizem que com tanto barulho na cidade é praticamente impossível identificar buzinas desnecessárias. Alguma vez você sentiu que seus esforços em dizer algo foram inúteis? Você tentou dizer algo e pareceu que ninguém estava dando bola. Às vezes fazer barulhos é a única opção que temos para chamar atenção dos outros.
Talvez você tenha outra opção. O que você faz quando precisa que as pessoas prestem atenção no que diz? Normalmente buzinar no tráfego só desperta mais raiva. Por favor, não se esqueça desse detalhe.
