🇺🇸 I have this idea that working in a field is tough. Of course that idea comes from the past, when people had no access to today’s technologies. Usually we keep the image of a handwork. I remember to visit “brother" Davino, in Tupã, working under the sun in his peanut plantation. I know how hard he did.
Different from him, I’m from the city. I think most of the city boys would think that work in a field under the sun, digging the soil, pushing a plowshare to open the holes and spreading the seeds, wouldn’t bring any motivation. Most of them are used to play video games, or play in the concrete, or inside the house, not doing any tough handwork. Usually after doing something different from that they will say: “I'm bored!”
This is today’s word: BOREDOM. We’ve heard so much this word lately and I’m pretty sure some grown ups get very irritated with it. To be bored is a state where nothing is enough to please us. The word comes from the proto-germanic burōną, which means “to pierce”. Have you seen a ratchet brace? It’s a kind of drill that we use to make a hole in a wood piece, by rotating a U-shape grip. If you’re working with something like that you have to spend a long time stand, just rotating the grip. Soon you’ll be bored. We try to make life so exciting with enthusiastic actions, that we can’t handle common activities anymore.
The boredom state is what makes us try something different. So it’s not bad at all to get bored sometimes, if that creates in us the desired to something better, like to get an electric drill to make holes more easily.

🇧🇷 Tenho a idéia de que trabalhar no campo é duro. Claro que essa idéia vem do passado, quando não havia acesso às tecnologias de hoje. Normalmente temos a imagem de um trabalho manual. Lembro do “irmão” Davino, em Tupã, dando duro na sua plantação de amendoim. Sei o quão duro ele trabalhava.
Diferente dele, sou da cidade. Acho que a maioria dos criados em cidade achariam que trabalhar no campo, debaixo do sol, cavando, arando a terra, abrindo buracos e jogando sementes, não traz motivação. A maioria deles está acostumada com video games, brincar no concreto ou dentro de casa, sem dar duro. Normalmente depois de fazer algo diferente já reclamam que estão com tédio.
Esta é a palavra de hoje: TÉDIO. Às vezes irrita ouvir gente reclamando que está cansada, com tédio de fazer qualquer coisa. Tédio é um estado de espírito onde nada satisfaz. A palavra vem do latim taedere, que significa “cansar” e tem relação o grego sikkhos, de “algo que é doentio”. Quando a gente está doente não tem disposição pra nada. Já o estado de tédio vai além da doença, porque pode se tratar de uma indisposição para fazer algo, só que é uma indisposição de origem na mente, uma falta de vontade. Isso é pior do que estar doente. A gente não encontra o remédio para essa condição na farmácia.
O estado de tédio pode nos levar a tentar algo diferente. Não que seja tão ruim sentir tédio de vez em quando, se despertar uma vontade por algo melhor. Ainda bem que o remédio não está na farmácia.
