🇺🇸 The number of change of guardianship has increased in the past 18 months in some counties of the State of Illinois. The major characteristic of those petitions are teenagers and pre-college young people. They are applying for the condition of independence, supported by friends and relatives, the new guardians.
It could raise some attention to understand why they are doing that, specially because in their background there’re wealthy families, some of the parents given up the guardianship are doctors, lawyers, realtors. Some people were intrigued by these cases and some could start to consider if some kind of family crisis or break down could be affecting the future of promising young people. That raised a yellow flag.
At the same time some universities noted that part of the students applying for scholarships on their financial programs are declaring themselves “financial independence”, using their new guardianship status to be eligible to claim a bigger financial support from the universities. Now a red flag has been raised higher. Some investigators are starting to identify a form of scam behind all of these scenarios. It seems like wealthy families are forging a situation to take financial advantage for their own benefits. Those scholarships are dedicated to support students who come from poor families and really depend on that kind of support to pursuit their academic formation. What could we say about that?
What a real education is? Getting a diploma at any, even fraudulent, costs, or raising the character and standing for values that try to make society better for everyone? What have we learned from all of this?

🇧🇷 O número de mudanças de custódia aumentou nos últimos 18 meses em alguns condados do Estado de Illinois. A principal característica nesses pedidos são adolescentes e pré-universitários. Eles estão pedindo por condição de independência, sob a custódia de amigos e parentes, os novos guardiões.
Isso poderia chamar a atenção para entender o porquê de estarem fazendo isso, especialmente por serem de famílias abastadas, alguns pais abrindo mão da guarda são doutores, advogados e corretores. Ao mesmo tempo algumas universidades notaram que parte dos estudantes que entraram com pedido de ajuda financeira se declararam “financeiramente independentes”, usando documentos de status de nova custódia para se qualificarem a receber ajuda financeira das universidades. Agora um alerta vermelho foi dado. Investigadores estão começando a identificar uma forma de esquema por detrás desses cenários. Parece que famílias ricas estão forjando a situação para terem benefício financeiro. Essas ajudas são dedicadas a estudantes que vêm de famílias pobres e realmente dependem desse tipo de ajuda para conseguir sua formação acadêmica. O que poderíamos dizer sobre isso?
O que é verdadeira educação? Ter um diploma a todo custo, mesmo fraudulento, ou elevar o caráter e defender os valores que tentam tornar a sociedade melhor para todos? O que aprendemos de tudo isso?
