🇺🇸 Although writing and speaking deal with words, when we’re writing we have more control of words. When we’re speaking it’s easy to lose the words. Once it’s said it’s gone. Writing I can erase and write it again. I’m familiar with both. I’m trying to write the way I speak and speak the way I write.
One the the problems we have when we speak is to talking too much. It’s like to scatter too many seeds in a plantation. We’ll end up wasting part of them. In communication we call this PROLIXITY. That’s today’s word. It comes from the latin words pro, which means “forward”, and lixus, which means “liquid”. Literally means the water that doesn’t stop to flow and is going to be wasted.
The meaning was transferred to the practice of talking too much, turning the conversation or the speech boring. Making the excessive use of words unnecessary. When I started to write regularly, I noted that I developed a form of prolixity when I was speaking in public. With the intention to reinforce some ideas on the listeners, I used to say the same idea in three different forms. That’s prolixity, although I had a purpose. So that’s what I did. I chose the best way to express the idea and said it just once. I aimed right to the point and my speech became three times shorter than before. People loved that!
One important rule in communication is “less means more”. Could we be being prolix in life? Wasting a lot and enjoying so little? Is it better enjoy much of few, or enjoy less of many? No more words here.

🇧🇷 Embora escrever e falar lidem com palavras, quando escrevemos temos mais controle sobre elas. Quando falamos é fácil perder-las. Uma vez dito, já se foi. Quando escrevo posso apagar e reescrever. Tenho familiaridade com os dois. Tento escrever como falo e falar como escrevo.
Um dos problemas que temos quando falamos é falar demais. É como jogar sementes demais numa plantação. Vamos acabar desperdiçando parte delas. Em comunicação chamamos isso PROLIXIDADE. É a palavra de hoje. Vem das palavras latinas pro, que significa “pra frente”, e lixus, que significa “líquido”. Literalmente significa a água que não para de jorrar e acaba sendo desperdiçada.
O significado foi transferido para a prática de falar demais, deixando a conversa ou o discurso entediante. Fazer o uso desnecessário de palavras. Quando comecei a escrever regularmente, notei que desenvolvi uma forma de prolixidade ao falar em público. Com a intenção de reforçar alguma idea para os ouvintes, dizia a mesma ideia de três formas diferentes. Isso é prolixidade, embora tivesse um propósito. Olha o que fiz. Escolhi a melhor forma de expressar a ideia e falava uma vez só. Mirei direto no alvo e tornei meus discursos três vezes menores que antes. Os ouvintes acharam bem melhor assim!
Em comunicação “menos quer dizer mais”. Poderíamos estar sendo prolixos na vida? Desperdiçando muito e curtindo pouco? Melhor curtir muito de pouco, ou pouco de muito? Sem mais palavras aqui.
